ith rapid economic development, Korea has undergone changes in interest and understanding of health care system. For both the public and government, the expansion of health care insurance service coverage and quality improvement of medical care became initial priorities.
Also the importance of health information has been becoming to recognize more and more.

Nowadays many Korean hospitals have been changing the paper based medical record system into electronic medical record system.
There are more than 10,000 medical record practitioners who passed the national license exam.
The active members are working in the field of professional medical organizations, such as health care facilities, Ministry of health and welfare, insurance companies, National Disease Control Organization, Institute of Health Insurance Evaluation, cancer centers, Korean Hospital Association, and health related research institutes.

Since medical record practitioners are acknowledged by the government as a specialized types of job it is stated by law that hospital-level medical institutions must employ medical record practitioners, and they must have licenses to work in general hospitals.

Korean hospitals, with high information technology level, are becoming more digitized that 90% and 80% of the hospitals implemented OCS and PACS, respectively. In addition, hospitals implementing EMR and digitalizing medical information management process have been increasing.
